Pittsburgh Steelers team report: Team takes risk by keeping Big Ben on field

SAN FRANCISCO—The decision to start injured QB Ben Roethlisberger against the 49ers was not a desperation move in an attempt to win Monday's game and gain the inside path to the No. 1 seed.
Rather, the decision to use him was made even before the Baltimore Ravens lost in San Diego at Sunday night—a defeat that put the Steelers in position to win the division title and get a first-round bye if they won their remaining three games.

But after being sacked three times and hit on several other throws in the fourth quarter, why did the Steelers continue to put him back in the game when trailing by more than two touchdowns? With no first-round bye on the horizon, risking injury to their star quarterback was not the wisest decision.
Roethlisberger passed for 330 yards and appeared to make it through the game OK, but his ankle will probably need some rest before the postseason. ...
Specials Notes: OLB LaMarr Woodley aggravated his hamstring injury in the third quarter and did not return. The extent of the damage was not known, but it is likely another setback for Woodley, who had missed all but two series of the previous five games with the injury. It is likely that Woodley will not be used again until the postseason.
Third-down back Mewelde Moore injured his knee in the fourth quarter and did not return. The extent of the injury is unknown, but his loss would affect the team’s hurry-up offense because he is employed as a reliable check-down receiver. He would be replaced by RB Isaac Redman, a tough, inside runner who is good at blitz pickup.
